One of five classic varietal wines from Sumarroca, made for more than 25 years from the vines on the Sabartés and Sumarroca estates.
We work in three different areas on the Sumarroca estate, each of which brings its own personality to the coupage. The first is the Feixa Llarga plot at the bottom of the estate, with cooler lands giving a gentler and slower maturing process and providing the wine with its refreshing notes. Although it is nearly twenty years old (1996), it is also the youngest vineyard used for the coupage. The second plot is the Carbonera. This is much more rocky with a high limestone content, giving the wine its strength and rusticity. The vines are from 1992. The part completing the coupage is from the Sabartés estate. The vines were planted in 1987 and provide a softness, elegance and Mediterranean style that perfectly complement the wine. The estate is clearly influenced by the Mediterranean sea and is practically at sea level.
The 2014 vintage began with heavy rains in November, followed by a mild and very dry winter. Budbreak was some days earlier than in previous years. Rains of up to 60 litres at the start of budbreak promoted healthy growth. Spring was mild, especially during the daytime, and rather dry. There was no consistent rainfall until towards the end of May. Temperatures rose considerably in June and the weather was very humid. Daytime temperatures were moderate for the rest of the summer with normal lows and some rain. Harvesting began a little later than usual and production was down on the previous year.
The aroma includes notes of tropical fruit such as passionfruit together with sweet Mediterranean fruit like vine peaches and fresh grapefruit. Fresh and flavourful on the palate, with the same notes as in the nose. Fresh, very aromatic finish.
The wine is made separately on the three estates in order to enhance the characteristics of each one and achieve the right coupage. Prefermentive maceration at 10ºC for 4 and 2 hours on two of the plots, and no maceration on the third. Static filtration for 24 hours. Fermentation at 14ºC for 21 days and aging with lees in the stainless steel tanks for 2 months.
