A limited edition of three great single varietal cavas. Gran Codorníu Gran Reserva is the true reflection of the Codorníu brand: Maximum respect for the varietal and the soil's typicity. In this cava one can enjoy the grandeur of prolonged aging in bottles, which has retained the vibrant and fresh notes of the Chardonnay grapes.
Temperatures in the Costers del Segre were lower than other years, especially during ripening, when considerably colder night temperatures were recorded. This was conducive to slow ripening and the Chardonnay was able to render its fullest expression.
Viña La Pleta is a small vine plot located 286 metres above sea level. It faces southwest and is on the best soils the winery has suited to this varietal. It has a distinctly continental climate with sharp contrasts in temperature of up to 20ºC and is influenced by the Pyrenees.
The vine stock is planted on shallow loamy clay soils with very little organic matter, as a result of which the berries acquire a fuller concentration of aromas and flavours and a degree of acidity that is ideal for wines which undergo prolonged aging, exhibiting an aromatic personality with dominant notes of fresh fruit.
Our great cavas are elaborated in an artisan way. We select and harvest the premium grapes from Viña La Pleta to make Gran Codorníu Gran Reserva Chardonnay. We carry out various sortings on the vine plot, classifying the grapes into different batches which are then elaborated separately. We harvested at the end of August, taking advantage of the cool night temperatures to avoid oxidation of the grapes' aromas.
The grapes were carefully picked by hand in 15Kg bins and the first selection was made in the vineyard itself. We transported the bunches in a refrigerated truck to our winery, especially suited for this range of cavas. The grapes were sorted on arrival and then cooled and gently crushed in the pneumatic press. We fermented the must in small tanks at a temperature of 17ºC. Alter fermentation we tasted the different batches and selected the ones that would be part of the final blend.
Gran Codorníu Gran Reserva has aged slowly at a constant temperature of 14ºC inside the thick walls of what was the first cellar at Codorníu. Alter aging in its lees for over 50 months the fruity notes have retained their full potential in this cava's aroma. For this first disgorging we stirred less than one thousand bottles by hand on the racks to drive the lees towards the neck of the bottles, which will be brought out on the market in a numbered edition.
Aspect: Straw yellow with golden highlights and a fine delicate mousse.
On the nose: Intense on the nose with abundant notes of orchard fruits (pears, green apples} and stone fruits (peaches) interlaced with elegant floral scents of white flowers. As it unfolds in the glass new aromas emerge from its long aging, underlain with delicate milky notes and pleasant notes of iodine.
On the mouth: An intense, voluminous and friendly mouth feel, with good balance and a velvety texture on the palate. An elegant creamy mousse. The aftertaste leaves reminiscences of white fruit and picks up those elegant iodine notes once again. A long lingering finish.
This cava brings new organoleptic nuances to the normal expresĴsion of cavas made from Chardonnay. You can enjoy it with a generous range of food matchings such as seafood, seasoned fish dishes (caldereta,marmitako,zarzuela, bouillabaisse),rice dishes, seasoned meats,casseroles and smoked foods. We also recommend you drink it served on its own in order to enjoy the wide range of registers this cava offers.

Codorníu were the first winery to create cava using Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Pallerada grapes. Codorniu owns the oldest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards, used for the production of cava with vines aged 30 years or more. This makes them experts in wine-growing and wine-making using these varieties. They were the first winery to use international varieties, with the first Chardonnay cava in 1984, the first rose cava using Pinot Noir in 2001 and in 2008, the very first Blanc de Noirs, using Pinot Noir. We have created our own style for the cavas we produce, combining local and international grapes, to make stylish, very expressive, refreshing aromatic cavas, with utmost respect for grapes used and the land they come from. A complete range of cavas, of differing styles, to satisfy everybody's needs.
Sustainable farming is the essence of our philosophy of caring for the vines. We intervene only when strictly necessary, with less input in order to promote natural balance and biodiversity. The result is healthier grapes, bursting with flavour.
